Course Description
The purpose of the Bronc Life Skills Program is to provide UTPA student-athletes with educational experiences and services that will assist them in their academic, athletic, and personal growth. This program is designed to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience at The University of Texas-Pan American and life in general.

The University of Texas-Pan American's Intercollegiate Athletics Department is committed to providing our student-athletes with informational sessions, seminars, and activities that will foster growth as balanced individuals. The UTPA Athletic Department feels strongly about preparing student-athletes for life after college. This year's version of the Bronc Life Skills Program will focus on career development to assure that student-athletes are being kept well informed about majors, careers and the necessary skills required to be successful candidates in the job market. Through specialized seminars and workshops, student-athletes will be introduced to the skills and tools required for a successful career after graduation. The goal is to prepare student-athletes in becoming productive, marketable, and knowledgeable individuals who are well-prepared for the future and able to place themselves into a viable job market.

Format

 

In order to establish a Bronc Life Skills program that is both educational and effective, the program has been developed so that the seminars are divided by class standing. The goal is to focus on traditional life skills and information gathering for freshmen and sophomores, while catering to the needs of upperclassmen through career development. The program is also starting a two year rotation of topics, to make sure that student-athletes are exposed to as many relevant topics as possible.

In the Syllabus where it States:
* All Student-Athletes: It is mandatory for all student-athletes to attend.
* Freshmen and Sophomores: It is mandatory for all freshmen and sophomores to attend.
*Juniors and Seniors: It is mandatory for all juniors and seniors to attend

Course Objectives
Upon Completion of the Seminars, Freshmen and Sophomores Will be Able to:
 
  • Develop mental training techniques, such as goal setting, to help succeed in athletic competition and in life.
  • Identify the effects and consequences of alcohol, and be able to make responsible, informed decisions about consumption.
  • Evaluate choices, consequences, and safety, regarding sexual relationships.
  • Understand how positive thoughts lead to success on and off the field of play.
  • Identify the mental, physical and emotional challenges of being a Division I college athlete and learn tips on how to conquer these challenges in order to make the most of your time at UTPA.
  • Identify proper choices in eating on campus, on the road and for optimal performance.
  • Identify and understand the importance of values when making decisions on the field of play, in the classroom, and in life.
  • Identify strengths and skills in order to help choose a major/field of study.
  • Gain insight on diversity issues on campus, the team and in the community.

Upon Completion of the Seminars, Juniors and Seniors Will be Able to:

  • Develop mental training techniques such as goal setting to help student-athletes succeed in athletic competitions and in life.
  • Identify the effects and consequences of alcohol, and be able to make responsible, informed decisions about consumption.
  • Understand which valuable skills learned in competition and through sport can be transferred into a career, the real world, and life.
  • Develop successful resume and cover letter writing skills for future career employment.
  • Identify the mental, physical and emotional challenges of being a Division I college athlete and learn tips on how to conquer these challenges in order to make the most of your time at UTPA.
  • Identify proper choices in eating on campus, on the road and for optimal performance.
  • Understand the transition of life after sport through the experiences of former student-athletes.
  • Understand the options and career paths that are available for student-athletes.
  • Gain insight on diversity issues on campus, the team and in the community

This session will provide student-athletes with a deeper awareness and understanding about the importance of goal setting. Dr. Doug Molnar, UTPA's Assistant Cross Country and Track and Field Coach, will be presenting to our student-athletes and will share information about goal setting and performance that will benefit them in their athletic and personal endeavors.

NCAA sanctioned speaker, Carolyn E. Cornelison, Ph.D uses her knowledge, personal experiences and personality to take a very realistic look at college drinking, taking responsibility, and emphasizes the student-athlete experience, particularly how competitiveness can carry over into free time experiences and lead to alcohol abuse problems for the athlete and the team.

The student-athletes will be educated on how to prepare and write a resume. They will also receive information on resume building, as well as other correspondence such as cover letters and thank you letters. The discussion will also cover how to prepare for an interview.

UTPA's Dr. Etzel Cardena, renowned expert in hypnotism, will speak to the student-athletes about the importance of thoughts on actions. This workshop will provide student-athletes with examples and demonstrations of how hypnotism and relaxation can enhance performance through positive thoughts and how positive thoughts lead to positive actions on and off the field/court.

This multifaceted session will focus on several areas of nutrition in which the student-athlete can be educated for optimal energy. Student-athletes will be engaged in an interactive workshop that will provide information and practice on how to eat right in the cafeteria, at restaurants and how to deal with change in eating patterns. Sport Enhancement Drugs and the pros and cons of a low carbohydrate diet will also be discussed.

This session will explore the process of finding and keeping a job. Several job skills and strategies will be discussed about how to find jobs and internships. Graduate school will also be discussed and what the pros and cons are of going back to school or postponing a year or two.

Student-athletes will be introduced to several testing inventories such as the Myers Briggs and the Strong Interest Inventory. The student-athletes will be able to identify skills and activities they enjoy in order to help choose a major/field of study.
