NINE FROM UTPA EARN ARTHUR ASHE JR. SPORT SCHOLAR AWARDS

EDINBURG, TX-Nine student-athletes from The University of Texas-Pan American have been named to receive a prestigious honor.

They have been named to receive Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards for 2003. The program is coordinated by Black Issues in Education, and the student-athletes honored are featured in this month's edition of the magazine.

Seniors James Davis (Oklahoma City, OK/Casady HS/Westark College) and Kevin Mitchell (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove HS/McLennan CC) were both named to the first team in men's basketball. Davis earned first team honors for the second consecutive season. Mitchell and Davis were two of just 10 student-athletes to be named to the first team. Davis has a 3.64 grade-point average, and is majoring in English and Geology, while Mitchell has a 3.57 GPA, and is majoring in Marketing.

Senior Christina Infante (Lyford, TX/Lyford HS) was one of just eight women's golfers honored. Infante has a 3.51 grade-point average, and is majoring in Marketing.

Freshman Otis Powers was one of 11 baseball players honored. Powers has a 3.33 GPA, and is a Pre-Law major.

Senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Laredo CC/Arnau Cadell HS) was one of 10 student-athletes named first team in women's tennis. Mateos has a 3.66 grade-point average, and is majoring in Marketing.

Junior Patty Villareal (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) was recognized for the third year in a row. She was named to the third team in women's track and field. Villarreal has a 3.35 GPA, and is a Pre-Dental major.

Senior Roosevelt Campbell (Mission, TX/Mission HS/South Texas CC) was named to the second team in men's track and field. Campbell has a 3.31 grade-point average, and is majoring in Biology.

Senior Amanda Carlow (Pine Ridge, SD/Rapid City CHS/Northeast CC) was named to the third team in women's basketball. Carlow has a 3.44 GPA, and is majoring in Corrections.

Sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) was named to the second team in men's tennis. Salvo has a 3.61 GPA, and is majoring in Management.

"I am so very excited for our student-athletes who were chosen as the 2003 recipients of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award," said UTPA Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support and Student Services Chris Uchacz. "Our student-athletes were chosen out of thousands of NCAA nominees, and the mere association with the legendary Arthur Ashe is a great compliment to the integrity of our student-athletes and their outstanding citizenship. I am so proud of the fact that we are not only graduating great students and athletes, but also terrific people, who will represent UTPA long after they earn their degrees and leave the sporting arena."
