BRONCS DROP SERIES FINALE AT LAMAR

Box Score and Narrative

BEAUMONT, TX –Neither five Bronc pitchers nor four runs in the first three innings were enough to carry The University of Texas-Pan American baseball to a victory in the third and final game of their three-game series at Lamar Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals used a 16-hit attack that included seven extra-base hits to defeat the Broncs, 23-4, at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Freshman right fielder Tony Ortiz (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan HS) and sophomore third baseman Matt Sisk (Fort Worth, TX/New Mexico/Arlington Heights HS) each accounted for two of UTPA’s runs. Ortiz drove home freshman left fielder John Lopez (Mission, TX/Mission HS) with a first-inning single, then singled home Sisk in the third. Sisk’s double in the third scored Lopez and junior shortstop Jerome McCoy (Fort Worth, TX/Eastern Hills HS/Northeast Texas CC) with UTPA’s other two runs.

The Cardinals, who trailed the Broncs, 4-3, after 2 ½ innings, took command for good with eight runs in the last of the third innings. “Shortstop Anthony Hayes hit his second home run of the series, a grand-slam homer to left field. Designated hitter Jordan Foster drove in three more runs with a triple to right field later in the same inning. Left fielder Mickey Hernandez’ two-run homer to center field was the big blow in a five-run LU fifth, while the Cards scored six runs on just two hits, including a solo homer by first baseman Micah Hoffpauir, in a six-run sixth. The game was called after 6 1/2 innings, due to the ten-run rule.

“We were ahead, 4-3, but then the wind started blowing out, we couldn’t keep the ball in the ballpark, and it got away from us,” said UTPA Head Coach Reggie Tredaway. “They got eight in the third, including a grand slam, and we couldn’t come back from that.”

The Broncs dropped to 1-4 with the defeat, while Lamar improved to 4-1. The Broncs will return to action when they visit McNeese State in a three-game series next weekend.
