–Senior lefthander Frank James (Elgin, TX/Elgin HS/Navarro JC) allowed
two hits in six innings and freshman center fielder Jonathan Mason (San
Antonio, TX/Jay HS) singled, tripled, scored two runs and drove in a
pair as The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team defeated
Lamar in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 8-0, and earned a
split on the day at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals won the opener,
8-1. James
combined with junior righthander Skip Weast (Inola, OK/Inola HS/Crowder
JC) and senior righthander Jacob Pierce (Longview, TX/Longview
HS/Navarro JC) to shut out LU on four hits in the nine-inning nightcap.
James earned his first victory of the season and evened his record at
1-1, walking three and striking out one. Freshmen
figured prominently in the Broncs’ attack in the nightcap. Freshman
right fielder Tony Ortiz (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan HS) gave the Broncs a 1-0
lead in the top of the first inning with a run-scoring ground out.
Freshman catcher Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine HS) drove in a run
in the third with a fielder’s choice. Mason‘s single drove in a run
in the three-run fifth inning, while sophomore third baseman Matt Sisk
(Fort Worth, TX/New Mexico/Arlington Heights HS) drove in another run
with a sacrifice fly. Mason tripled in a run in the three-run fifth. The
other two scored on an RBI double by freshman first baseman Carlos
Gallardo (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS), and a sacrifice fly by junior
shortstop Jerome McCoy (Fort Worth, TX/Eastern Hills HS/Northeast CC).
UTPA ended up with 15 hits against five LU pitchers. Starter Josh Gray,
who pitched the first three innings, took the loss and saw his record
fall to 0-1. UTPA’s only scoring in the
seven-inning opener came in the fourth inning, when junior designated
hitter Jarrad Maddox (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS/Northern Arkansas JC)
singled home McCoy, who had doubled. Lamar scored five times in the
second inning. Center fielder Shaun Stanton doubled home one run, first
baseman Micah Hoffpauir squeezed home another with a sacrifice, and
shortstop Anthony Hayes hit a three-run homer down the left field line.
Stanton had an RBI single and catcher Matt Gowan hit a sacrifice fly in
the third, while third baseman Michael Torres drove home a run in the
fourth with a single. Thomas Stlee allowed four hits in six innings to
earn the victory, improving to 1-0. Junior righthander Travis Parker
(Brownsville, TX/Hanna HS/UT-Brownsville) took the loss for the Broncs,
falling to 0-2. “We
played seven freshmen in the second game, and they all played well,”
said UTPA Head Coach Reggie Tredaway. “We played really hard, and
everyone was excited about the victory.” The Broncs improved to 1-3 with the split, while Lamar fell to 3-1. The teams will play again Sunday in the final game of the three-game series. BASELAMARDH020902 |
