BRONCS LOSE TO SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE

SAN MARCOS, TX –Southwest Texas State scored seven runs in their first three at-bats and went on to defeat The University of Texas-Pan American's baseball team, 14-2, at Bobcat Field Tuesday night.

The Bobcats scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Mark Younk doubled with runners at second and third to make it 2-0, then scored on a double by third baseman Marc Coles. Coles hit a three-run homer in the third to key a four-run SWTSU rally.

UTPA broke through with two runs in the seventh. Freshman shortstop Marco Garza (Mission, TX/ Sharyland HS) led off by reaching on an error by shortstop Ignacio Suarez, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior second baseman Jerome McCoy (Fort Worth, TX/Eastern Hills HS/Northeast Texas CC) doubled down the right field line to score Garza. One out later, McCoy scored on an infield grounder by sophomore third baseman Matt Sisk (Fort Worth, TX/Arlington Heights HS/New Mexico).

Lefthander Paul Schappert pitched five scoreless innings for SWTSU to earn the victory, and improve to 2-5. Sophomore righthander Justin Bogy (West Columbia, TX/West Columbia HS), the first of three Bronc pitchers, took the loss and dropped to 2-2.

The Bobcats improved to 18-14 with the victory, while UTPA dropped to 8-22 with the defeat. The Broncs will close out their two-game series with Southwest Texas Wednesday evening.
