For Immediate Release: March 9, 2002 BRONCS DEFEAT TEXAS CHRISTIAN
ROUND
ROCK, TX –Righthanders Travis Parker (Jr. Brownsville, TX/Hanna
HS/UT-Brownsville) and Justin Bogy (So. West Columbia, TX/West Columbia
HS) combined on a four-hitter and freshman right fielder Tony Ortiz
(Fort Worth, TX/Nolan HS) hit a two-run homer and threw out a runner at
third base as The University of Texas-Pan American defeated Texas
Christian, 5-4, Saturday night at the Round Rock Express College Classic
at the Dell Diamond. Ortiz’
two-run homer in the top of the third inning followed a leadoff single
by sophomore third baseman Matt Sisk (Fort Worth, TX/Arlington Heights
HS/New Mexico) and gave UTPA a 5-4 lead. Ortiz threw out TCU right
fielder John Duncan at third base in the bottom of the third inning as
he attempted to go from first base to third base on a single by third
baseman Mike Settle. UTPA
took an early lead when they scored three times in the first inning.
Junior shortstop Jerome McCoy (Fort Worth, TX/Eastern Hills HS/Northeast
Texas CC) led off with a single and moved to third on a single by junior
left fielder Bruce Kennedy (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS/Northeast Texas
CC). Sisk singled McCoy and Kennedy home. A two=out single by junior
catcher Sean Flynn (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian Academy) scored
Sisk. The
Horned Frogs took the lead in the second. Second baseman Will Lewis was
hit by a pitch and center fielder Marshall Wilson walked. They both
scored on a double by shortstop Shaff Elkouri. Parker
settled down after the Broncs went ahead in the third, allowing no runs
on two hits in the next five innings, and earning the victory to improve
his record to 1-5. Bogy pitched two hitless innings to earn his first
save of the season. Clint Mokry (1-2) took the loss for TCU. The Broncs improved to 3-15 with the win, while TCU fell to 7-11. UTPA will conclude action at the Round Rock Express College Classic when they play Notre Dame Sunday at 2:00 p.m. BBTCU1030902
