Associate Head Coach Robert Davenport

Robert Davenport’s efforts have been instrumental in the success of Head Coach Bob Hoffman’s teams at the University of Texas-Pan American. As a result, Davenport enters his first year as the associate head coach and his third year as a member of the UT Pan American coaching staff.

Davenport has assisted Hoffman in leading the Broncs to solid performances in each of his two seasons at the helm. “We’re very fortunate to have Robert in the position he is in,” said Hoffman. “Basically, giving him the title of Associate Head Coach is a reflection of what he’s been doing for our program. Robert has worked very hard to help us make the strides we’ve made in our program, and I’m thankful to have him alongside as we continue to improve at UTPA.”

Davenport is the Broncs’ recruiting coordinator and also runs much of the day-to-day operation of the office. This is the second time that Davenport has been associated with Hoffman and each time, success has been the result.

Davenport served as Hoffman’s top assistant at Oklahoma Baptist from 1994-97 when the Bison went 122-25 and advanced to the NAIA Championships each of the four seasons. Since Coach Hoffman’s arrival at UTPA in 1999, the Broncs have posted their best back-to-back records since the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons. .

“I’m honored that Bob would think enough of me to give me that title,” said Davenport. “Coaching isn’t just rolling out the balls on the court and blowing the whistle. There’s a lot more to it than that, that’s only about 20 percent of the job. I handle a lot of things off the court, and I’m very appreciative that people think enough of me to give me an honor like that. I want to do the best I can to uphold it.”

When he worked with Hoffman at Oklahoma Baptist, Davenport was the recruiting coordinator. He also coordinated the OBU basketball camps, which were the largest basketball camps in the state of Oklahoma.

In 1997, Davenport became the head coach at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.  In his lone season at LU, Davenport led his team to a  third place conference finish.

Davenport moved on to Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, Missouri, and his team moved up from next to last the year before he was head coach to a second place finish in the American Midwest Conference. Two of his players earned All-Conference honors, and six were named Academic All-Conference. Prior to his time at OBU (1991-93), Davenport was an assistant coach at Collin County Community College.

Davenport is very involved in his profession.  He started, coordinated and organized the first-ever Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association All-Star games in 1994.  The game is still held annually in Shawnee, Oklahoma

A two-year basketball letterwinner at his alma mater, Oklahoma Baptist, Davenport also played two years at Oklahoma Christian College.  Davenport graduated from OBU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations.  He received a Master of Arts degree in Education from East Central University (Okla.).

Davenport is married to the former LeAnna Crow.  The couple has two children, Morgan, 7, and Reid, 3.
