EDINBURG, TX–The University of Texas-Pan American
senior guard Mire Chatman (Garland, TX/South Garland HS/Southwestern
Christian JC) has received his first post-season honor. Chatman has been named Independent Player of the
Year by CollegeInsider.com, the group that ranked the Broncs as high as
14th in their Mid-Major Top 25 Poll this season. Chatman finished the regular season averaging 26.2
points per game and 3.6 steals per game. He ranked third and fourth,
respectively, among NCAA Division I players in those categories. He was
named second team National Association of Basketball Coaches/Pontiac
All-District Nine, and was the only player from an independent team to
be so honored this season. His 46 points against Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi ranked as the third highest single-game scoring total in
Division I this year, while his 44 points against New Mexico State tied
him for seventh best. “It’s a great honor,” said Chatman. “I give
all the glory to the team and to the coaching staff, for having
confidence in me this year. It’s really a great honor. “Mire definitely had an amazing year,” said
UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman. “His performance, coupled with the
ability of our team to find him made for a unique season. Mire was an
integral part of our success, and helped make things happen for us this
year. I’m happy for him. Any time someone can do the things he can do,
where he has rebounds, assists and steals in addition to points, and get
noticed for that, it’s a good situation.” “Mire Chatman is an outstanding young man who has been a key contributor to the rebirth of not only Bronc basketball, but the entire UTPA athletic program,” said UTPA Director of Athletics William J. Weidner. “He is most deserving of this prestigious award. Our entire athletic department and The University of Texas-Pan American are most proud of Mire’s accomplishments.” MBB-25-02-030402 |
