Associate Head Coach
Robert Davenport

Robert Davenport’s efforts have been instrumental in the success of Head Coach Bob Hoffman’s teams at the University of Texas-Pan American. As a result, Davenport enters his third year as the associate head coach and his fifth year as a member of the Texas-Pan American coaching staff.

Davenport has assisted Hoffman in leading the Broncs to solid performances since Hoffman has been at the helm of the UTPA program. “Coach Davenport gives us the flexibility in a lot of different areas that we need as a staff,” said Hoffman. “He’s worked very hard with all aspects of our recruiting, along with organizing all office and technological advances that we’ve made in the program. His diversiti as a coach enables us to compete at a high level as a program.”

Davenport is the Broncs’ recruiting coordinator, and also runs much of the day-to-day operation of the office. This is the second time that Davenport has been associated with Hoffman, and each time, success has been the result.

Davenport served as Hoffman’s top assistant at Oklahoma Baptist from 1994-97, when the Bison went 122-25 and advanced to the NAIA Championships each of the four seasons. Since Coach Hoffman’s arrival at UTPA in 1999, the Broncs have posted their best back-to-back records since the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.

“I think we’ve made great strides,” said Davenport. “Through Coach Hoffman and our hard work, we’ve earned the respect of our peers, not only in coaching circles, but also in recruiting circles, and that’s a direct reflection not only on the coaching staff, but also on the athletic program and the university. We don’t want to sell ourselves short. That;s reflected in the product that we’ve put on the floor, not only in wins and losses, but also in terms of academic success. In the last four years, we’ve only had two seniors who didn’t graduate.”

When he worked with Hoffman at Oklahoma Baptist, Davenport was the recruiting coordinator. He also coordinated the OBU basketball camps, which were the largest basketball camps in the state of Oklahoma.

In 1997, Davenport became the head coach at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. In his lone season at LU, Davenport led his team to a third place conference finish.

Davenport moved on to Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, Missouri, and his team moved up from next to last the year before he was head coach to second place in the American Midwest Conference. Two of his players earned All-Conference honors, and six were named Academic All-Conference. Prior to his time at OBU (1991-93), Davenport was an assistant coach at Collin County Community College.

Very involved in his profession, Davenport helped start, coordinate and organize the first Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association All-Star games in 1994. The game is still held annually in Shawnee, Oklahoma

A two-year basketball letterwinner at his alma mater, Oklahoma Baptist, Davenport also played two years at Oklahoma Christian College. Davenport graduated from OBU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations. He received a Master of Arts degree in Education from East Central University (Okla.).

Davenport is married to the former LeAnna Crow. The couple have two children, Morgan, 8, and Reid, 5.
