Assistant Coach
Spencer Wright

Spencer Wright, who has been instrumental in UTPA’s success during his first four years at The University of Texas-Pan American, returns for his fifth season year as an assistant coach. In his first four seasons with the Broncs, he has been instrumental in UTPA’s success.

Prior to joining the Broncs, Wright spent four years in his hometown of New York, New York working in a variety of areas. During the summers of 1996 and 1998, Wright worked with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association as a youth basketball coach. His responsibilities included helping instruct youth in basketball fundamentals, as well as counseling them about moral and social issues. In 1996, Wright was a manager and personal trainer at the New York Sports Club.

Wright played for current UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman at Oklahoma Baptist University between 1992 and 1995. During his tenure, he helped lead the Bison to two National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament appearances. In 1993, OBU went 34-4 and finished second in the nation. Wright earned All-Sooner Athletic Conference honors as a player at OBU.

“We’ve been blessed to have Spencer with us for four seasons,” said Hoffman. “This will be his fifth season with us. As he continues to grow as a coach, he has shown great leadership in lots of areas of responsibility that will help us continue being successful.”

Wright completed his education at OBU in 1995, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Physical Education. After completing his OBU career, Wright was one of 20 players invited to the Indiana Pacers free agent camp in the summer of 1996.

“In the four previous years that I’ve been here, I was really excited about one season,” said Wright. “This season, I’m more excited that I’ve ever been about putting a team on the floor. We have size, and we’re deeper than we’ve ever been at every position. I look for us to be really good both this year and next year.”

Wright and his wife, Amy, have one son, Bryce, who is nine months old.
