  UTPA XC TEAMS 11^TH, 17TH AT TEXAS A&M INVITATIONAL  

COLLEGE STATION, TX – Senior Perla Rios-Handy led the way for the University of Texas-Pan 
American cross country teams at the Texas A&M Classic Saturday.

Rios-Handy finished fourth overall, as the UTPA women finished 11^th and the men finished 17^th.

Rios-Handy’s time for the six kilometer race was 23:21, 38 seconds behind the winner, Sita Waru 
of McNeese State. Maria Gonzales of the Lady Broncs was 47^th in 25:26, Patricia Villareal was 
64^th in 26:10, Milagros Martinez was 106^th in 30:24, and Galena Ojeda 114^th in 33:44.

The UTPA women’s team scored 335 points. Texas A&M finished first with 48 points.

UTPA’s men scored 515 points. Texas A&M also won the men’s meet with 75 points.

Hugo Cervantes made his 2001 debut for the UTPA men, and led the way, finishing the five-mile 
course in 77^th place, with a time of 28:58. Israel Arroyo was 90^th in 29:43, Martin Longoria 
110^th in 31:34, Esteban Reyna 116^th in 31:51, and Roosevelt Campbell was 122^nd in 32:44.

^“ It was a great meet for the women,” said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. “It lets us know
what we need to do to get ready for regionals. I’m very pleased with the women, they’re running 
super hard. Today was the first race of the year for our top men’s runner, Hugo Cervantes, and 
he was just kind of feeling out where he was at. The men had a strong showing as well. 
Overall, I was pleased.”

The Broncs and Lady Broncs will return to action when they visit the Southwest Texas Short 
Course in San Antonio Friday evening.
