SANTIAGO DELARREA NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-INDEPENDENT

EDINBURG, TX-The lone senior men's golfer for The University of Texas-Pan American has been honored.

Santiago DeLarrea has been named second team All-Independent for the 2001-2002 season, after voting by head men’s golf coaches and sports information directors of the NCAA Division I Independent schools sponsoring men's golf.

DeLarrea, a senior from Vitoria, Spain (Colegio Miguel de Cervantes), saved his best collegiate round for last, shooting a final-round 69 to finish second individually and lead the Broncs to the team title at the National Minority College Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, Florida May 12th. He averaged 76.4 strokes per round while shooting 29 rounds this season. In addition to finishing three strokes behind the medallist at the National Minority Championships, DeLarrea tied for seventh at the Stephen F. Austin/Crown Colony Classic, and tied for 14th at the Louisiana Tech Invitational. He led Texas-Pan American in four tournaments this season.

“It’s a great honor for Santiago to end his career the way he did,” said UTPA Head Coach Mark Gaynor. “He was our leader during the season, and he not only had a strong finish at the Minority Championship, but he was also top 10 at the Crown Colony. I was glad to see Santiago recognized.”
