BRONCS 17TH AFTER FIRST DAY AT BORDER OLYMPICS

LAREDO, TX –The University of Texas-Pan American’s men’s golf team is in 17th place after the first day of action at the 17-team Border Olympics, at the Laredo Country Club.

The Broncs shot a 36-hole score of 621, placing them 27 shots behind Rice.

Baylor is in first place with a score of 564, followed by Louisiana-Lafayette and San Diego State at 568, New Mexico at 573, Texas Tech at 577 and Colorado State at 578. Next are Arkansas and Pepperdine at 580, Texas-San Antonio at 583, Central Florida, Central Oklahoma and Lamar, at 584, Sam Houston State and Texas-Arlington, at 586, and host Texas A&M, at 593.

Junior Omar Halldorsson (Akureyri, Iceland/Schola Aknreyrensis) led the Broncs, shooting scores of 80 and 72 for a 36-hole score of 152, good for a tie for 72nd place. Sophomore Rudy Celedon (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) shot scores of 76 and 79 for 155, good for a tie for 82nd place, freshman John Huerta (Alice, TX/Alice HS) shot 82 and 77 and sophomore Ben Piper (Lubbock, TX/Coronado HS) shot 78 and 81, both good for scores of 189 and a tie for 88th place, and senior Santiago DeLarrea (Victoria, Spain/Colegio Miguel de Cervantes) shot scores of 78 and 83, good for a score of 161 and 90th place.

The tournament will conclude Saturday.
