Leads UT Pan American Mens Golf at Border Olympics. LAREDO, TX
Santiago DeLarrea finished tied for 44th to lead The
University of Texas-Pan American Bronc Golf team to a 14th
place finish at the Border Olympics, held at the Laredo Country Club
this past weekend. DeLarrea, a
sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, shot a final round 72, finishing 17
strokes out of first place with a three-round total of 225.
Bronc Teammate and sophomore Todd Grubert finished in 64th
place, carding a three-round total of 230.
Two strokes behind Grubert and tied for 69th with a
three round total 232, was Stephen Slaughter.
Freshman Ben Piper tied for 78th with 234 strokes in
his first tournament of the spring.
Junior Ricky Benavides finished in a tie for 81st
place at 235while James Aleman finished tied for 88th with a
three-round total of 238. Kyle Willman
of Texas Tech finished first, taking individual medallist honors, firing
a three-round total of 208. Three
strokes back, with identical 211s, were Jason Hartwick from the
University of Texas and Jim Anderson of the University of New Mexico.
In the team
standings, New Mexico fired a three-round total of 855, defeating the
University of Texas by a combined five strokes to take the tournament
title. Both Texas A&M
and Baylor tied for third with three-round team totals of 874. UTPA finished 14th with a three-round total of
905. The Broncs close their season
at the prestigious National Minority Championship held in Port St. Lucie,
Florida May 10-12. Border Olympics
