UT Pan American Men’s Golf
Finishes Fourth at Gulf Coast Collegiate Classic
BAY ST. LOUIS, MISS. – Santiago
DeLarrea and Stephen Slaughter tied for 11th place overall, leading
the University of Texas-Pan American to a fourth place showing at the Gulf Coast
Collegiate Classic, played at The Bridges Golf Course on Tuesday.
DeLarrea, a sophomore from Sao
Paulo, Brazil, and Slaughter, a junior from Fort Worth, both shot two-round
totals of 155 to tie for 11th overall, just five strokes out of first
place. James Aleman tied for 15th
with a 156, while Ricky Benavides, who led after a first round 72, settled for
21st place with a 157. Ben
Piper was the fifth Bronc and tied for 25th place with a 161.
Graeme Brown of the University of
Mobile took home medallist honors, defeating Louisiana Tech’s Chris Baker in a
playoff. Both players shot 36-hole
totals of 150. Robert Hunt of
Tennessee State was third at 151.
In the team standings Oral Roberts
came from behind to take first place. The
Golden Eagles trailed by nine strokes after day one, but shot a final round 303,
the second best round of the tournament to UTPA’s 298, to defeat Mobile and
Louisiana Tech by eight strokes, 610 to 618.
UTPA was fourth with a 619, New Orleans was fifth with a 629.
The tournament was the first for
Mark Gaynor as the Head Coach of the UTPA Broncs. The fourth place finish was the best showing by a UTPA
men’s golf team in two years.
The Broncs will return to action on October 9th and 10th at the Grand Canyon/Oak Craft Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.
