Immediate Release: November 7, 2000 Celedon, Slaughter Lead
UT Pan American Men’s Golf at Hal Sutton Intercollegiate
SHREVEPORT,
LA. – Rudy Celedon and Stephen Slaughter finished second and fourth
respectively to lead the University of Texas-Pan American men’s golf
team to a third place standing at the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Golf
Tournament, held at the Olde Oaks Golf Club on Tuesday. Celedon, a
freshman from Edinburg, shot a second round 68 to move up to a tie for
second place overall. He
finished with a two-round total of 141 (73-68), just three strokes back of the overall
winner Byron Shultz of Tulane. Celedon’s
second round 68 tied for the low round of the tournament.
Greg Larson of Oklahoma City tied with Celedon for second.
Slaughter, a junior from Fort Worth, tied with Justin
Strausbaugh of Tulane for fourth with a two round total of 142 (70-72). Ricky
Benavides was tied for 21st place overall with a consistent
150 (75-75). Santiago
DeLarrea and Todd Grubert tied for 24th with identical
151’s. In the
team standings, Tulane University won by a slim two-stroke margin
over Nicholls State University, 579 to 581.
UTPA was just four strokes back with a 583.
Also in third place, tied with the Broncs were Southern Mississippi and New
Orleans, also with 583’s.
Oklahoma City finished in sixth place with a 587, Louisiana Tech
was seventh with a 602 and Centenary was eighth with a 629.
UTPA and Tulane both shot the low team round of the tournament on
Tuesday with 288’s. The tournament wrapped up fall play for the Broncs, who will next tee off at the Moe O'Brien Invitational on March 19-20 in Lake Charles, La. |
