Hill Sets School Record to Lead UTPA Track and Field at Spring Fever Open
EDINBURG – Dawne Hill broke her own school record in the hammer throw, while Gonzalo Gonzalez and Shari Galvin each won two events to lead the way for the University of Texas-Pan American Track and Field team at the Spring Fever Open, held Sunday morning at the UTPA Track and Field Stadium.
Hill, a senior from McAllen, broke her old school record in the hammer throw by more than a foot with a toss of 148-9 ½ in her fourth attempt of the day. The distance was good enough for Hill to place second in the hammer. Her previous record was 147-6, set last year at the UT-Arlington Open.
Gonzalez, a senior from La Joya rolled past the competition in both the shot put and the discus. He won the shot put with a toss of 50-3, 12 feet ahead of the second place finisher. He followed that up by throwing the discus 148-5 ½, also 12 feet ahead of the second place finisher. Gonzalez recently set the UTPA record for the indoor shot put with a toss of 50-11.
Galvin, a sophomore from McAllen, ran away from the competition in the 200 and 400-meter sprints. She edged teammate Sabina Lozano in the 200 meter, running a 26.13 to Lozano’s 27.20. In the 400 meter, she again edged out Lozano, running a 59.12 to Lozano’s 63.49. Galvin’s sister Jamika won the 100-meter dash with a 13.56.
Other strong performances from the Broncs on Sunday included Perla Rios winning the women’s 5,000 meter with a time of 19:32.3. Teammate Sandy Guerrero took second in the event. Laura Cruz and Rosie Rosales finished 1-2 in the women’s high jump. Laquanta Bivens was second in the women’s discus with a toss of 120-2. David Ozuna won the men’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 58.62 to edge out Minnesota Mankato’s Mead Maney, who was just .51 seconds back. Clayton Stuart won the pole vault with a height of 13-0. Eugene Asare-Mensah leapt to victory in the triple jump with a distance of 44-7.
The Broncs will host their second track and field meet of the spring, the Angela Proctor Invitational next Saturday, March 18, 2000, at the UTPA Track and Field Stadium.
