UTPA Track and Field Posts Strong Showing at Estudiante Universitario Meet in Mexico
TAMPICO, MEXICO -- The University of Texas Pan American Broncs and Lady Bronc Track and Field teams took a long trip to Tampico, Mexico, to compete in the 7th Annual Estudiante Universitario meet. A total of 21 teams participated in the event.
Gonzalo Gonzalez rolled past the competition in the discus on Saturday, with a toss of 43.36 meters, three meters ahead of his closest competitor. He was just 37 cm short of the meet record. He came back to set the meet record in the shot put on Sunday. Gonzalez broke the record for the shot put with throw of 15.13 meters, breaking the old record by nearly meter.
The meet was a homecoming for Lady Bronc freshman Galina Ojeda who was born in Tampico, Tamaulipas. Ojeda made it a happy homecoming by finishing second in the 400 meter hurdles.
Shari Galvin finished 1st in the women’s 400 meter run, dominated the race from start to finish. Meanwhile twin sister Jamika finished second in the Women’s 100 meter run. The Galvins came up big on the second day of competition with Shari finishing first in the women’s 200 meter run with a time of 26.26. Jamika finished right behind her with a time of 27.03.
The Bronc Men’s 4x400 meter relay team nearly picked up the gold medal on Sunday, but fell just short and had to settle for the bronze. The Broncs led for most part of the race until getting caught at the end. Runners David Ozuna, Emmanuel Butler, Carlos Gallegos, and Jason Montemayor all received a bronze medal.
Olaya Teran placed first in the 800 meter with a time of 2:21.68. Dawne Hill finished second in the Hammer throw with a launch of 42.08 meters. Sandy Guerrero finished third in the women’s 5K run with a time of 19:57.96. The Lady Broncs’ 4x400 meter relay team finished second with a time of 4:09.77. The team consisted of Jamika Galvin, Shari Galvin, Olaya Teran, and Galina Ojeda. David Ozuna had a strong showing at the UAT Meet, placing second in two events. Ozuna placed second in the 400 meter dash, then came back to place 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Bronc Track and Field teams return to action on April 8-10 at the Texas Relaysin Austin.
