Meanwhile, sophomore Isaac Ybarra (Edinburg, TX/Sharyland HS) won the hammer throw with a toss of 175 feet, one inch. His throw set a new UTPA school record. He also finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, which is a personal best.

Sophomore Valerie Partch (Smithville, MO/Smithville HS) won the high jump at 5-8, while freshman Deneb DeLuna (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS) was fifth in the shot put at 43 feet, one-half inch. Freshman Patty Villareal (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) ran the women’s 5000 meters in 20:22.76.

“We had some really good results, including a couple of school records,” said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. “Valerie jumped very well. She just missed the NCAA qualifying mark at 5-10 ½. We had two school records on the men’s side, with Isaac and Rashaad putting the school records at very respectable marks. We had some good, solid performances on both sides.”
