Are You Ready for UTPA Basketball?

        Get ready as the Broncs begin another action-packed season! The Broncs will have a challenging home schedule that features Rice and Mississippi Valley State, as well as fellow independents Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Savannah State and Centenary. Southern of the Southwestern Athletic Conference will also come to Edinburg, as will in-state opponents Schreiner and Southwest Assemblies of God as well as Concordia of Michigan and Central Baptist. Every game will be an event, as the Broncs will have a full season of special game-night promotions.
    Fourth-year Head Coach Bob Hoffman has established an exciting, up-tempo brand of basketball. Last year, the Broncs had their best season since 1989-90, finishing with a 20-10 record, winning the championship at the San Juan Shootout, defeating New Mexico State in a shootout in the penultimate home game of the season and finishing 19th among NCAA Division I teams in field goal percentage and 24th in scoring. Senior guard Mire Chatman, one of the most exciting players in the nation, ranked third nationally in both scoring and steals.
    The UTPA Fieldhouse was the place to be during the 2001-2002 season. The Broncs went 12-2 at home last year, averaging 3035 fans per home game. Five crowds of 3500 or better jammed the 4000-seat arena, including three overflow crowds including 5224 for the final home game of the season against Centenary. Point guard Kevin Mitchell returns, and will be counted on to once again trigger UTPA's high-octane offense. With seven of their final 10 games at home, the Broncs will be in good position to make a late-season run.
    Your season ticket package also includes tickets to all 15 Lady Bronc home games. Join Interim Head Coach Tracy Anderson as she continues a new era in women’s basketball at UTPA. Two years ago, the Lady Broncs set a record for wins as an NCAA Division I member.  
    This season, the Lady Broncs welcome back an experienced group of players that includes Alex Gravel and Naima Williams, as well as an exciting group of newcomers. The home schedule includes three consecutive home games at both the beginning and the end of the schedule. Southland Conference power Texas-Arlington, in-state rival Angelo State and Tulsa of the Western Athletic Conference will visit the UTPA Fieldhouse in November, while fellow independents Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne and Lipscomb and in-state rival Incarnate Word come to UTPA in February. Other opponents include Binghamton of America East, Air Force of the Mountain West Conference, Louisiana-Lafayette of the Sun Belt and in-state rivals Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Midwestern State, and Prairie View A&M and fellow independent Centenary. Northern Arizona of the Big Sky will be the Lady Broncs' opponent December 14th at the South Padre Island Convention Center.
