Immediate Release: December 21, 2001 LARAMIE, WY-Wyoming jumped out to an early lead and defeated the University of Texas-Pan American women’s basketball team, 94-69, at the Arena-Auditorium Friday night. UW outscored UTPA, 28-13, midway through the first half to take a 36-20 lead with 6:15 remaining before halftime. The Cowgirls led by as many as 21 points before the Lady Broncs came back, using a three-pointer by junior guard Michelle Smith (Vancouver, BC/Heritage Park HS) and a pair of free throws by junior forward Naima Williams (Houston, TX/Clear Brook HS) to shave Wyoming’s halftime advantage to 51-35. A 12-3 second half run by the Lady Broncs, which included a pair of baskets by senior forward Kelli Kreuser (Bettendorf, IA/Davenport North HS/Truman State University) cut UW’s lead to 66-55. But the Cowgirls responded with a 10-0 run to open up a 21-point advantage and maintained their lead. Freshman guard Nikki Hitchens (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado HS) led UTPA with 18 points and five rebounds. Kreuser added 16 points and eight assists, Smith had 15 points and three assists, and Williams had eight points and eight assists. Freshman guard Anette Johansen (Oslo, Norway/Foss Videregaaende HS) led the Lady Broncs with 13 rebounds. Carly Stucky led Wyoming with 30 points. She connected on eight three-point goals to set a UW school record, breaking the previous mark of seven. Carrie Bacon added 20 points, Ann McColl 17 and Darci Arsene 16. The Lady Broncs fell to 2-10 with the defeat. The Cowgirls improved to 4-5, and a perfect 3-0 at home. UTPA will return home and get back into action when they host Oral Roberts a week from tonight, December 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. WBBWYOMING122101
