Texas A&M-Corpus Defeats UT Pan American 69-53 in Women’s Basketball Action

EDINBURG – Detra Johnson came off the bench to score 19 points, leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi past the University of Texas-Pan American, 69-53, in women’s basketball action Saturday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The score remained close for most of the first half until the Islanders went on a 10-1 run over the last five minutes of the first half to take a 14-point lead into the locker room. From there, TAMUCC ran away with the game in the second half. The Lady Broncs were held without a basket for an eight-minute period during the second half and the Islanders extended their 11-point lead to a 24-point margin.

Johnson, a senior from New Deal, Texas, made 8-of-13 shots from the field in 28 minutes of play to lead all scorers. Also scoring in double figures for the Islanders was Jean Clark with 14 points, Kristin Rogers with 11 points and ShaKayla Hawkins with 10 points. Naima Williams led the way for the Lady Broncs with 15 points and nine rebounds. Alexis Williams had 11 points, while Alexandra Gravel had 10 points.

UTPA dropped it’s third straight game and fell to 11-16 overall on the season. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has won six straight games and is 15-11 overall this season.
