Student-Athletes Honored as 2001 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars
The
Journal of Black Issues in Higher Education has recently honored three
student-athletes at The University of Texas-Pan American as 2001 recipients of
the prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar award.
Woman’s golfer, Adriana Espinoza, and Baseball player, Oziel Ortiz was
both honored for the second consecutive year.
First year Cross Country and Track standout, Patty Villarreal was honored
for the first time.

Bronc Golfers Come up Short at BYU Dixie Classic
ST. GEORGE, UT – As a result of an
untimely injury, the Lady Bronc Golf team was forced to officially withdraw from
the team competition at the BYU Dixie Classic.
Melissa Head, a freshman from Oklahoma City, OK was forced to withdraw
from competition as a result of a neck injury.

2/7/01 - Southern Methodist Takes Title at Lady Bronc Women’s Golf Classic Wednesday: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Melissa Newman-Gillespie shot her third consecutive sub-80 round in windy conditions to come from behind and win medallist honors, while Southern Methodist overcame a sluggish final round to win the team title, as play wrapped up at the Lady Bronc Classic on Wednesday at The Club at Cimarron.
