  UTPA’s Handy and Moses finish Strong at Ty Terrell Relays.

  BEAUMONT, TX – Perla Handy finished first in the 3,000 meter run while Amy Moses finished second in the discus throw to lead the UT-Pan American Lady Broncs at the Ty Terrell Relays.

Handy, a senior from LaPorte, Texas, ran the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:24.13.  This was her third 1^st place finish of the current outdoor season.  Freshman Amy Moses (Edinburg, TX) had a strong showing in the women’s discus finishing in 2^nd place with a throw of 136’10”.  Moses also finished 4^th in the shot put with a distance of 40’07”.50.  Teammate LaQuanta Bivens’ throw of 119’02” in the discus earned her a 5^th place finish. 

  Other notable Lady Bronc finishers were April Hipolito who finished third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:45.09.  Valerie Summa tied her own school record in the high jump with a leap of 5’06.00.  On the men’s side, Robert Lopez finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 47’07.75. 

  Several of the Broncs will see action this week in the prestigious Texas Relays April 4-7.  The entry standards for this meet are a true testament to athletic ability.  In last year’s Texas Relays, the UTPA Track & Field team sent three student-athletes.  This year six student-athletes have qualified including Perla Handy, Galina Ojeda, Valerie Summa, Robert Lopez and Rashaad Ben.  Freshman pole-vaulter, Michael Sperry, also qualified but will not make the trip due to a recent injury.

  After the Texas Relays, the track and field teams will travel to College Station, Texas to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational on April 14^th.
