Fernandez Plays Strong, But UT-Pan American Women’s Tennis Falls to 0-5

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – Maria Fernandez won her first two singles matches of the season and one doubles match, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Texas-Pan American dropped matches to Stephen F. Austin State and Centenary in women’s tennis action Saturday.

Fernandez, a sophomore from Cordova, Mexico, won her first match of the season, a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, decision over Amanda Tbaisz at number one singles. She then teamed with Sagnite Garcia to defeat Ashley Cagle and Lisa Osborn to take a tough 8-6 win at number one doubles. The Broncs, who were short-handed due to injuries and illnesses, lost the other three matches and were forced to default the last three for a 7-2 loss to SFASU.

In the second match of the day, Fernandez again won a tough 6-3, 6-4, decision at number one over Sarah Everett. Fernandez is now 2-9 on the season. Freshman Linda Rodriguez played one of her best matches to date, but forced to play number three to the injuries, she fell 6-4, 6-1.

The Lady Broncs will return to action on Saturday, February 19th against UT-San Antonio at 1 p.m.
