Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Defeats UTPA Women’s Tennis 8-1

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS --- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeated the University of Texas-Pan American 8-1 in women's tennis action at the Kings Crossing Golf and Country Club, Friday evening.

Sagnite Garcia and Maria Fernandez earned the only match win for the Broncs, defeating Melissa Cucciniello and Kelli Kukk at number one doubles, 8-4.

The closest matches of the day came at number one and number three singles.  UTPA’s Fernandez saw her three-match win streak come to an end, but not without a fight as she dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4, decision to Kristin Hedger at number one.  Garcia dropped the first set 6-3, to Cucciniello, but fought back to win the second set 7-6 in a tiebreaker.  Cucciniello then slipped past Garcia in the mini-tiebreaker third set, 10-8, to win the match.

UTPA fell to 0-7 on the season with the loss, while TAMUCC improved to 5-5.  The Lady Broncs will return to action on Saturday when they take on Lamar at 2 p.m. in Corpus Christi.
