EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team picked up its seventh win of the season, while the women’s team fell in a tough 5-4 decision in tennis action Saturday afternoon against Centenary College at the Orville Cox Tennis Stadium.

The men’s team rolled to win by winning four of the six singles matches and taking the doubles point as well.  Seniors Unai Uranga and Jorge Cuesta teamed to win the number one doubles match, 8-4, while Enrique Bastante and Cesar Vargas won at number two doubles, 8-1 to give the Broncs the doubles point.

Bastante, Uranga, Vargas and Juan Saiz picked up singles win for the Broncs, who improved to 7-4 on the season.  Uranga won the best match of the day, a 6-3, 7-5, decision over Jimmy Allen at number three singles.  His doubles partner, Cuesta, dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4, decision to Eden Kleiman at number one.

The Lady Broncs found themselves in a dogfight against the Ladies of Centenary with three singles matches going the full three sets and nearly all of them going down to the wire.  Edinburg native Mireya Villareal got things off to a good start with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Tiffany Millerd at number five singles.  Fellow Edinburg resident Kristine Getchell followed that up with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, come-from-behind win over Cassianna Costa at number three.  But the Lady Broncs were unable to win any of the other singles matches and trailed 4-2 going into doubles play.

Maria Fernandez and Sagnite Garcia picked up a 9-7 win at number one singles and Villareal and Marissa Guzman won at number three, 9-8.  However Getchell and Linda Rodriguez fell at number two, 8-2 to give the win to Centenary.

The Broncs return to action on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. against UT-San Antonio at the Cox Tennis Stadium.  Both teams will wrap up the 1999-2000 season with a match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, April 15th, beginning at 1 p.m.
