Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Downs UT Pan American in Men’s, Women’s Tennis Sunday

EDINBURG – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeated the University of Texas-Pan American in both men’s and women’s tennis matches played Sunday afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Courts.

On the men’s side TAMUCC the Islanders received a strong challenge from UTPA in five of the singles singles matches, but was able to win all except for one and then swept the three doubles matches to win 6-1. Juan Saiz picked up the lone UTPA win, with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7, win over Eric Von Hellens at number five. Islander Eusebie Oprea defeated Unai Uranga, 6-4, 7-5, at number three in perhaps the best match of the day.

The two teams met earlier this season with TAMUCC taking a 7-0 decision from UTPA. The match was the final one for both UTPA and TAMUCC, with the Islanders finishing the season at 18-5 and the Broncs at 7-6.

On the women’s side the Islanders dropped just two matches and defeated the Lady Broncs 7-2. Maria Fernandez won the lone singles match for the Broncs, defeating Kristin Hedger 6-2, 6-2, at number one. The Lady Broncs lone doubles win came at number three by default. UTPA nearly picked up wins at number two and three singles, but fell just short. Micah de Koning slipped past Sagnite Garcia, 7-6, 6-2, at number two and Melissa Cucciniello defeated Kristine Getchell, 6-3, 7-6, at number three.

The match wrapped up play for both teams this season on the women’s side as well with TAMUCC finishing with a 9-14 record and UTPA a 1-14 mark.
