DOUBLES PAIR WINS AT ITA
HOUSTON, TX –The University of Texas-Pan American’s doubles team of Eve Nickelson and Kathryn Waslen won their first round match on the first day of play at the Omni Hotels Southwest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships at Texas Christian University. Nickelson and Waslen downed Mindy Ko and Kylie Wallis of Rice, 8-3, in their opening match. The team of Elisabet Mateos and Celine Merlini fell to Carolin Schappacher and Jitka Vetrokova of Texas-Arlington, 8-5. The Lady Broncs’ team of Jessica Brown and Ana Pena dropped an 8-0 decision to Katrin Gaber and Karla Maneinas of TCU, 8-0. In singles, Waslen fell to 30th-seeded Roberta Spencer of Texas A&M, 6-1, 6-1, while Merlini lost to third-seeded Sarah Boswell of Houston, 6-1, 6-4. Brown lost to 32nd-seeded Leoni Weinrich of TCU, 6-1, 6-0. Nickelson was defeated by Ziva Grasic of Texas, 6-0, 6-0, and Mateos lost to Rice’s Annie Goodrich, 6-2, 6-2. Play continues Saturday in the championship and consolation brackets. ##WTITA-101901
