STATE DEFEATS LADY BRONCS
LAKE CHARLES, LA–The crucial doubles point
escaped The University of Texas-Pan American women’s tennis team, and
the Lady Broncs fell at McNeese State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.
Senior Eve Nickelson (Franklin, TX/Franklin HS/Temple JC) and sophomore
Jessica Brown (Sioux City, IA/North HS) of UTPA defeated Johanna Tyreus
and Marina Gando at number two doubles, 8-5. However, the Lady Broncs
lost the other two doubles matches, requiring them to win four singles
matches to earn the victory.
Sophomore Celine Merlini (Vevey,Switzerland/Cessev HS) defeated Yvonne
Bresler at number one singles, 0-6, 7-6, (10-6), winning a super
tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets. Junior Elisabet Mateos
(Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) defeated Magali Risoleo at
number two singles, leading 6-2, 2-0 when Risoleo retired. Freshman Ana
Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) also won, defeating Tyreus at number
five singles, 7-6, 6-3.
The Lady Broncs fell to 1-7 with the defeat,
while the Cowgirls improved to 4-3.
UTPA will return to action when they visit St. Mary’s (CA) in
the first match of their spring break trip this Saturday.
