HUNTSVILLE, TX –Sophomore Celine Merlini (Vevey, Switzerland/Cessev HS) was a double winner, but The University of Texas-Pan American women’s tennis team fell to Sam Houston State Saturday, 4-3. Merlini defeated Mounia Hassib at number one singles, 2-6, 6-3,7-5. She teamed with junior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Span/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) for an 8-1 win over Hassib and Veronica Castillo at number one doubles. Freshmen Kathryn Waslen (Calgary,AB/West Island College) and Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) were the Lady Broncs’ other winners. Waslen defeating Erika Rudich at number three singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Pena downed Jayme Holmstrom at number six, 6-3, 6-4. SHSU won the other singles matches, and took two of three doubles matches to claim the victory. “It was a tough match to lose,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “We had some good individual efforts. Celine played very well in singles and doubles, and Kathryn and Ana played well in singles. They’re freshmen and they’re coming along well. Once we can get everyone playing at the same level, we’ll start to win some of these close matches.” The Lady Broncs dropped to 1-3 with the defeat. They will host Stephen F. Austin Saturday. SAM
