LADY BRONCS DROP FINALE TO TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

EDINBURG, TX –The University of Texas-Pan American women’s tennis team dropped their final match of 2001-2002 season, losing to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-2, at Cox Tennis Stadium Thursday.

The Lady Broncs won one of three doubles matches, giving the Isladers the doubles point, then fell in four of the six singles matches. .

Two UTPA players won twice. Junior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) defeated Felice Sanchez at number one singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Freshman Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) defeated Kelli Kukk, 6-1, 7-5, at number four singles. Mateos and Pena combined to defeat Sanchez and Jessica Martinez, 8-2, at number one doubles.

 “We played hard,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “We gave a good effort. Elisabet and Ana played great in both singles and doubles. I’m proud of the way we played this year. Our girls stayed positive, continued to work, and gave a good effort, and I think we improved throughout the year. I’m looking forward to building on that for next year.”

With the loss, the Lady Broncs finished the season with a 6-15. The Islanders also played their final match of the year and finished 6-9.
