ADVANCE AT UTSA
SAN ANTONIO, TX –Several Lady Broncs advanced on the first day of action at the University of Texas-San Antonio Tournament at the UTSA Tennis Center Friday. In flight one singles, Celine Merlini will play for third place after defeating Sonya Ortiz of St. Mary’s, 6-3, 6-0, and losing to UTSA’s Nicole Bouffler, 6-4,7-5. In flight two, Elisabet Mateos will play in the consolation finals after losing to Eva Soderkvist of Texas-San Antonio, 6-1, 6-1, and advancing by injury default. In flight three, Kathryn Waslen will play for third place after defeating Lindsay Burtin of Lee Junior College, 6-4, 6-4, and losing to Diana Ramirez of St. Mary’s, 6-2, 6-4. In flight 4, Alana Breen will be in the consolation finals after losing to Southwest Texas State’s Regan Schneider, 6-1, 6-3, and defeating Liz Mauer of St. Edward’s, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. In flight 5, Eve Nickelson lost to Sara Convery of Southwest Texas State, 6-1, 6-1. In flight 6, Jessica Brown lost to Thuy Phan of St. Mary’s, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, before advancing on an injury default, and Ana Pena lost to Makenzie Fryar of Southwest Texas State, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and then defeating Celeste Acosta of St. Edward’s. In doubles, Merlini and Mateos lost to Bouffler and Sandra Mayr of UTSA, 8-1. Waslen and Breen advanced on an injury default, and Nickelson and Brown lost to UTPA’s Pena and Celina Gomez of Southwest Texas State, 8-6. The tournament will continue Saturday. ##WTUTSA-110201
