For Immediate Release: November 3, 2001 SAN ANTONIO, TX–Four Lady Broncs won in singles
and a pair of doubles teams were successful as the University of
Texas-San Antonio Fall Invitational Tournament concluded Saturday at the
UTSA Tennis Center. Celine Merlini placed third in flight one singles
by defeating Felice Sanchez of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-3, 6-2.
In flight two singles, Elisabet Mateos won the consolation championship
by defeating Vanessa Kelly of St. Edward’s, 7-5, 6-1. In flight five,
Eve Nickelson defeated Monica Gonzalez of St. Mary’s for third place.
In flight six, Ana Pena of the Lady Broncs defeated teammate Jessica
Brown, 6-3, 6-1. In flight three, Kathryn Waslen of UTPA lost her third
place match to Emily Foster of UTSA, 6-3, 6-4. Alana Breen lost in the
flight four consolation final to Laura Alcosenoas of Lee Junior College,
6-3, 6-3. In doubles, Merlini and Mateos won the consolation
championship in flight one, defeating Tina Klemenc and Jovana Dimovic of
Southwest Texas State, 9-8. Waslen and Breen finished second
in flight two, losing their championship match to Eva Soderkvist
and Emily Foster of UTSA, 8-1. In flight three, Ana Pena teamed with
Celina Gomez of Southwest Texas State to finish second in the third
flight. They defeated Sara Convery and Laura Gomez of Southwest Texas
State, 8-6, and lost to Diana Ramirez and Thuy Phan of St. Mary’s,
8-6. The Lady Broncs’ Eve Nickelson and Jessica Brown lost to Raimrez
