April 6, 2001 UT Pan American Women’s Tennis Falls to JUCO Power, Lee College EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American women’s tennis team dropped a tough match against Lee College Thursday afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Complex. Freshman Celine Merlini was the lone Lady Bronc posting a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Rachel Hatley in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Merlini has compiled an impressive singles record of 24-8 for the season. At the number two spot, Eve Nickelson battled valiantly in her loss against Martina Rezar 6-4, 6-4. In
doubles action freshman Alana Breen and junior Erica Espinoza posted the
lone win for UTPA 8-6 at No. 3. With the loss, the Lady Broncs fall to
7-14 on the season. Thursday’s
match was also the last home match for the Lady Bronc’s lone
graduating senior, Mireya Villarreal. Prior to the match there was a
brief ceremony where Villarreal was noted for her exploits as a Lady
Bronc. The Lady Broncs return to action on Saturday, April 14 as take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. in their final match of the season.
