A versatile contributor,
Lopez performed well both on the mound and in the outfield as a sophomore
in 2003.....Tied for second in victories while ranking third
in ERA.......Earned a save in UTPA's 7-6 win at Oral Roberts April 13th.....Struck
out eight batters when he won for the first time against Arkansas-Monticello
February 22nd......Ranked fifth in games started (5) and tied for second
in games finished (7)......Had three hits against Texas...... Drove
in two runs against Sam Houston State.......The top returning hitter
on the team, Lopez batted .300 last spring while appearing in 42 games
as a freshman during the 2002 season
.Had a slugging
percentage of .342, and an on-base percentage of .373
.Second
among Broncs with eight stolen bases
Had a .989 fielding
percentage.
Earned District Most Valuable Player honors as a senior at MISSION
HIGH SCHOOL.....Named All-State.....Also named All-District....Named
Athlete of the Year as both a junior and a senior at MHS, becoming only
the second player ever to be so honored.....Named Pitcher of the Year
in each of his last three seasons.... Batted .480 as a senior with nine
triples, two home runs and 32 runs batted in.....Went 10-4 on the mound
as a senior with 140 strikeouts in 98 innings and a 1.09 earned run
average...Named Offensive Player of the Year...Received the Leo Najo
Award.
Born February 13, 1983 in Harlingen, TX....Son of Tilly and John Lopez....Has
two sisters, Jeannette and Jaclyn.....Majoring in Biology with a minor
in Chemistry.
