Edinburg, Texas - Washington State (6-3) jumped to an early lead and never looked back in its 15-3 win over Texas-Pan American (7-9).
The first inning was a battle. Grant Richardson singled to right field to drive in Collin Henderson for the first run of the game. The Broncs got Jay Miller out trying to steal home to end the inning. Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) led off with a walk then advanced to second a ground out. Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) singled down the right field line to score Alamia and tie the game.
The Cougars scored three runs in the second and third innings to jump to a 7-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) singled to left center to score Alamia to cut the gap to 7-2. Washington State broke the game open in the seventh inning by scoring six runs. The Cougars added two more in the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Mark Rodriguez (Jr./San Antonio, Texas/Howard College) led off with a solo home run over the left field wall for the final run of the game.
For UTPA, Alamia was 2-for-3 and scored two runs and Rodriguez had his first NCAA Division I home run. Alamia extended his hitting streak to 13 games and his reaching base safely streak to 27 games.
For Washington State, Jay Miller was 5-for-6 and Henderson was 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove in seven. Aaron Trolia gave up five hits, two runs and struck out five in six innings to pick up the win.
Texas-Pan American will finish the series tomorrow with Washington State. The
game is scheduled to start at noon.
