BRONCS FALL TO CALIFORNIA, 20-5

EDINBURG, TX-California scored 18 runs in a span of three innings and went on to a 20-5 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American's baseball team in the first round of the Round Rock Express College Classic at the Dell Diamond Friday.

The Golden Bears scored six runs in the second inning and had an 18-0 lead after four innings. The game was called after seven innings due to the ten-run rule.

The Broncs broke through in the top of the fifth. Freshman left fielder Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX (Edinburg North HS) singled, and senior shortstop Josh Englert (Westminster, CO/Standley Lake HS/Central Arkansas) and sophomore center fielder John Lopez (Mission, TX/Mission HS) followed with walks. One out later, senior designated hitter Bruce Kennedy (Mansfield, TX/ Mansfield HS/ Northeast CC) hit a grand-slam home run. Sophomore second baseman Marco Garza (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS) followed with a triple, and scored on junior third baseman Ben DiOrio's (Canon City, CO/Canon City HS/Seward County CC) infield out.

Cal broke a scoreless tie in the second on a walk, an error by starting pitcher Jason Duhon (Maurice, LA/Abbeville HS/Grayson County CC), and a three-run home run by first baseman James Holder. Right fielder Brian Horwitz capped the inning with a two-run homer.

Horwitz hit two home runs and finished with eight runs batted in. Holder also had two homers and drove in five runs, while shortstop Allen Craig had four RBIs. Designated hitter Conor Jackson also homered for the Golden Bears.

Garza finished with four hits in as many times at bat for the Broncs, while Alamia was three for three with a double.

"We didn't hit our spots," said UTPA Head Coach Willie Gawlik. "We don't have enough velocity to overcome mistakes, and, if we don't hit our spots, and the ball goes down the middle of the plate, it's going to be a problem. Cal had some good hitters, and they hit the ball out of the park. Bruce Kennedy hit a grand-slam, Marco Garza had four hits, and Louie Alamia had three hits in his first start as a freshman."

Matt Brown pitched the first five innings to get the win for the Golden Bears. Duhon pitched the first two innings and took the loss, dropping to 1-1.

Texas-Pan American dropped to 4-3 with the defeat, while Cal improved to 7-2. The Broncs will return to action when they play Nebraska in a second round game Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
