BRONCS ADD RICKY BROYLES
EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's baseball team has signed its ninth recruit this spring, and its 14th recruit overall.
Pitcher/infielder Ricky Broyles of Longview, Texas, Northeast Texas Community College and Spring Hill High School will join the Broncs this fall. He will enter UTPA as a junior, with two years of eligibility remaining.
A two-year starter at Northeast Texas CC, Broyles hit .316, with 17 doubles, three triples, one home run and 24 runs batted in during his two-year career. As a pitcher, he was 2-1 with 14 saves and 67 strikeouts in two seasons.
The East Texas Pitcher of the Year at Spring Hill HS, Broyles was named All-State in both 2000 and 2001. He was twice named District Most Valuable Player, was named All-East Texas in each of his last three seasons, and was chosen for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches' All-Star Game as a senior. Broyles was named District Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore.
Flowers hit .348 in high school, with 15 doubles, two home runs, 57 runs batted in and 97 runs scored in 81 varsity games during his three-year career. As a pitcher, he was 25-2 with a 1.69 earned run average. During his high school career, walking 56 and striking out 248 in 178 innings pitched. As a senior, he was 13-0 with 121 strikeouts, while as a junior, he was 10-1 with 93 strikeouts.
"I'm please that we signed Ricky, he will definitely be an asset to our team," said UTPA Head Coach Willie Gawlik. "He can play second base and third base, and we can also use him as a closer. Ricky has good velocity and good command of his pitches and he's a proven winner. He's a solid player, and we're looking for him to come in and do an outstanding job for us."
