KSOX TO BROADCAST ALL MEN’S, SELECTED WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAMES

EDINBURG, TX-For the third consecutive season, AM 1240-KSOX Monster Sports Radio will broadcast all of The University of Texas-Pan American’s men’s basketball games. In addition, for the second consecutive season, KSOX will also broadcast selected Texas-Pan American women’s basketball games. The announcement was made by UTPA Director of Athletics William J. Weidner and KSOX General Manager Lance Hawkins.

All of UTPA‘s men’s basketball games, at home and on the road, will be broadcast. The Broncs are coming off their best season in 12 years after posting a 20-10 record last season, and will play 11 regular season home games in 12 dates (including one exhibition game), while participating in three tournaments.

KSOX plans to broadcast six women’s games. Tentative plans call for KSOX to air the November 27th women’s game against Angelo State, the December 14th game against Northern Arizona, games against Air Force January 9th and New Mexico State January 18th, and games against Louisiana-Lafayette February 3rd and Incarnate Word February 25th.  The NAU game will take place at the South Padre Island Convention Center, and the January 18th game against NMSU will be broadcast from the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico prior to the men’s game against the Aggies. The other four women’s broadcasts will originate from the UTPA Fieldhouse.

KSOX Sports Director Jeff Koch will handle the play-by-play for all of the men’s broadcasts. Koch’s new assistant, Mark Flores, will handle color on selected men’s game and will handle the play-by-play for the five women’s games originating from South Texas.

The men open the regular season at the South Padre Island Roundball Invitational Tournament November 22nd and 23rd and those games will be KSOX’s first men’s broadcasts. The broadcast schedule includes all three of UTPA’s tournaments, the opener at South Padre Island and tournaments at Hofstra November 30th and December 1st and at Hawaii December 27th-30th.  It also includes road games at Air Force, Saint Louis, Kansas State, Southern, Lamar, Baylor, Centenary, Texas Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Savannah State and Morris Brown. The South Padre Tournament includes 2001-2002 NCAA Tournament participant Tulsa, and two of the teams at Hawaii’s Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, Western Kentucky and the host Rainbow Warriors, also made the NCAAs last season. All of the home games will be broadcast, including visits from Rice, Mississippi Valley State, Southern, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Savannah State, Centenary, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“KSOX Radio is the premier radio station for sports programming in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Weidner. “Our continued partnership with the number one sports radio station in the region cements our credibility in regards to UTPA athletics being a program that is on the rise. We are extremely pleased to not only continue our partnership with KSOX regarding the broadcast of all of our men’s basketball games this season, but also as it relates to our expanded coverage of selected Lady Bronc women’s basketball games as well. There is much anticipation on campus and throughout the region as we look forward to an exciting season of Bronc and Lady Bronc basketball at UTPA. All of our fans throughout the region will continue to have the opportunity to follow the excitement of UTPA basketball as both programs play impressive and challenging schedules this season.”

”Continuing our association with UTPA basketball is a no-brainer,” said KSOX General Manager Lance Hawkins. “Our partnership with the university is a major part of our local sports programming and image across the Rio Grande Valley. We could not be more pleased with the response from our listeners and the business community in being the exclusive home of Broncs and Lady Broncs basketball.”

“The only person more eager to start the season than (Head) Coach (Bob) Hoffman is me,” said Koch. “The 20-win season last year was incredible, and a tremendous foundation for the program. Personally, I am having the time of my life, not only broadcasting the games, but also traveling with the team. Coach Hoffman and his staff are not only quality teachers, but also quality people, and I am proud to be associated with them. November can not get here soon enough. With the additional Lady Broncs games and Mark Flores coming aboard, the 2002-2003 schedule should be one to remember.”
