BRONCS SET SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMPS
EDINBURG, TX-Reservations are now being taken for the Bronc Basketball
Summer Camps, directed by The University of Texas-Pan American Head Coach Bob
Hoffman this summer.
An individual and team camp will take place Friday, June 27th through Tuesday,
July 1st, while a pee wee camp is scheduled to be held during the mornings of
June 18th, 19th and 20th. Both camps will take place on the UTPA campus.
The individual and team camp will emphasize fundamentals of basketball. Campers
will learn fundamentals, and have a chance to apply what they learn in actual
game settings. The camp is for boys ages 8 to 18. Campers will dine in the UTPA
cafeteria, and stay in the UTPA dormitories. Teams may attend the camp together,
and will remain as a group during the games.
The pee wee camp is for boys and girls ages 5-8. Campers will also learn basic
fundamentals, and will have the opportunity to participate in games. The camp
staff will include Bronc players and coaches, and will give campers an opportunity
to have fun and learn the game of basketball at the same time.
"We had a great response last year," said UTPA Associate Head Coach
Robert Davenport. "We're expecting another great turnout this year, and
our camps have to be the fastest growing camps in Texas."
"This is always a high point of our year," said Hoffman. "It's
a great chance to spend time at the grass roots level of basketball, and to
remind ourselves what the sport truly is about. Attending our camp will give
players a chance to stay overnight at UTPA, and work with the coaches and players
and staff who were instrumental in our team's success."
Hoffman, who led the Broncs to a 10-20 record last season, has a 54-63 record
at Texas-Pan American in four seasons, and is 385-157 in 15 years as a collegiate
head coach. His record at UTPA is the fourth best in school history, trailing
only Abe Lemons (55-16, .775), Sam Williams (244-164, .598) and Bill White (94-66,
.588).
In 2001-2002, Texas Pan-American was 20-10, the most wins the Broncs have had
since the 1989-90 season. They had their first winning season since the 1993-94
campaign, earned their first tournament victory since 1989-90, and, with 12
victories at home, recorded the most wins at the UTPA Fieldhouse since the 1993-94
campaign.
