BRONCS SET FALL MEN'S GOLF SCHEDULE, FOUR TOURNAMENTS SLATED
EDINBURG, TX-The new men's head golf coach at The University of Texas-Pan American, Drew Scott, will have to hit the ground running.
Two weeks after arriving in the Rio Grande Valley, Scott will take his team to the first of their fall tournaments when they begin the fall season at Nebraska.
The Broncs have four tournaments scheduled for the fall. After opening at Nebraska's Fairway Club Invitational September 8th and 9th, the Broncs visit the Carolina First Intercollegiate in Florence, South Carolina September 22nd and 23rd. The following week, UTPA visits the Fred Marx Invitational at Louisiana-Monroe, and Texas-Pan American will conclude their fall schedule at the Crown Classic at Lufkin, Texas October 13th and 14th.
"We're looking forward to getting started," said Scott. "Our first tournament will be a good event to start at. It's not necessarily going to have the strongest field we'll see, and it will be a good test to measure ourselves against the other teams that will be there."
Former UTPA Head Coach Mark Gaynor, now the head coach at Francis Marion, will be the host when the Broncs visit the Carolina First Intercollegiate. "The golf course at that tournament will probably be the best one we play all year," said Scott. "The tournament is held at the Country Club of South Carolina, and it used to host events on the Nike and Buy.com Tours, which are the tours just under the PGA Tour. We'll fly to our first two tournaments, and it's always exciting to travel and represent the university."
The Broncs' final two events of the fall will see them facing district opponents. "We're in District VI, and we'll be playing against district opponents in our other two tournaments," said Scott. "We'll be playing against teams from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, and they will be a good test to see where we stand among the teams in our area. The top eight teams from District VI qualify for the NCAA Central Regionals, and our goal is to establish a head-to-head record against all of the teams we'll see. We'll compete against most of the mid-major teams who will be fighting it out for the last two spots in the regionals."
