Bossier City, La. - With just two tournaments left in his career, Rudy
Celedon (Sr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) picked the right time for
his first career win. Celedon shot a 208 to win the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate
by two strokes over Jeremy Dean of Sam Houston State. UTPA will play
in the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic on April 23-24 in Charlottesville, Va.
Sam Houston State shot 294-292-283 for an 869 and won by 25 strokes over McNeese
State. UTPA shot 311-300-285 for an 896 and moved from sixth place to third.
The 285 was tied for the second lowest single-round score in school history.
Rounding out the top five were Centenary (298-303-297=898) in 4th and Louisiana
Tech (299-305-296=900) in 5th.
Individually, Celedon shot a 66 on the final round which was one stroke behind the school record of 65 by Luis Arechiga in 1997. His 208 made him just the sixth Bronc to shoot under 210 for a three-round tournament in UTPA history.
"I'm pleasantly surprised about our play today," said Head Coach Drew Scott. "I'm not stunned because I knew we were capable of playing to this level. We just got out of the gate quickly today. We struggled over the last three holes or we would have been second. That fact will serve as motivation for us at the next tournament. Rudy deserved to win the tournament. He has just been on a roll over the last few months."
