BRONCS 14TH AFTER 1ST DAY AT FRED MARX INVITATIONAL
MONROE, LA-The University of Texas-Pan American's men's golf team is in 14th place after the first day of action at the 14-team Fred Marx Invitational Tournament, hosted by Louisiana-Monroe at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
The Broncs shot scores of 317 and 315 for a 36-hole total of 632, leaving them six strokes behind Western Illinois.
Stephen F. Austin leads the tournament with a score of 591. The Lumberjacks are followed by host ULM with 592, Middle Tennessee State at 593, McNeese State at 598, Troy State and Texas State-San Marcos at 605, Louisiana Tech at 608, Northern Iowa at 609, Nicholls State and Birmingham Southern at 611, Jackson State at 620 and Centenary at 625.
"It's a tough day to play, the scores really weren't good for the entire tournament," said UTPA Head Coach Drew Scott. "It's a little windy, and it's a tough, challenging golf course. Tomorrow is a fresh new day, and it would be nice to make up some ground and end on a good note."
Senior Paul Manganilla (Carrollton, TX/ Carrollton HS/Navarro College) led the Broncs with scores of 75 and 77 for a total of 152, and is tied for 22nd place. Senior Rudy Celedon (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) shot 81 and 77 for 158 and is tied for 57th, sophomore Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, AB/Wetaskiwin HS) shot 79 and 81 for 160 and is 66th, freshman Colin Norris (Calgary, AB/Cochrane HS) shot 82 and 80 for 162 and is 68th, and senior John Huerta (Alice, TX/Alice HS) shot 87 and 87 for 174 and is 75th.
The tournament will conclude Tuesday.
