LUFKIN, TX - The University of Texas-Pan American's men's golf team used a season-best round to move into sixth place after the first day of play at the Southern Chrysler Crown Classic, at the Crown Colony Country Club.

The Broncs fired a season-best score round of 296 in the first round, a second round score of 302, and a 36-hole total of 598, two strokes behind fifth-place Rice. Texas-San Antonio leads with a score of 578, host Stephen F. Austin is at 582, Texas State-San Marcos is at 587 and Oral Roberts is at 588. Following the Broncs are Louisiana Tech at 602, Sam Houston State at 604, Missouri-Kansas City at 610, the SFA B team at 623, Southwestern at 631, and Nicholls State at 632.

Paul Manganilla (Sr./Carrolton, Texas/Carrolton HS/Navarro College) led Texas-Pan American, shooting 69 and 76 for a total of 145, tying him for sixth place. Following Manganilla was Rudy Celedon (Sr./Edinburg, Texas./Edinburg North HS), who shot 77 and 72 for 149 and is tied for 19th. Colin Norris (Fr./Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane HS) shot 74 and 77 for 151 and is tied for 25th, Craig Berger (So./Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite HS) shot 76 and 77 for 153 and is tied for 32nd, and Ben Piper (Sr./Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS) shot 86 and 85 for 171 and is 66th.

"We played well today," said UTPA Head Coach Drew Scott. "We're 20 shots back of UTSA, but if we play well tomorrow, hopefully, we'll move up."
