BRONCS SET SPRING GOLF SCHEDULE
EDINBURG, TX-An ambitious schedule with good competition awaits The University of Texas-Pan American's men's golf team this spring.
The Broncs are scheduled to play in five tournaments, beginning with the Rice Intercollegiate in February and culminating with the National Minority Golf Championships in May.
"We're playing in five good, solid tournaments, highlighted by the Rice
Intercollegiate," said UTPA Head Coach Drew Scott. "It's the first
time we've played in that tournament in quite a while. The showcase tournament
for us will be at the University of Virginia. There will be a lot of good teams
from the east. North Carolina is always in the top 20, and the University of
Virginia is a good team. It will give us a good test, help us to play good competition,
and it will help us get ready for the National Minority Golf Championships in
May."
After competing at the Rice Intercollegiate February 9th and 10th, the Broncs
travel to Sam Houston State for the Bearkat Invitational March 14th and 15th,
then visit Arkansas-Little Rock for the Trojan Cup March 29th and 30th. Texas-Pan
American visits Virginia for the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic April 23rd and
24th, then will participate at the National Minority Golf Championships in Port
St. Lucie, Florida May 7th, 8th and 9th.
"The tournament at Rice will give us a chance to play on a good golf course against good teams, and it will also give us a chance to play some district teams," said Scott. "It's also the closest tournament we can play. The Virginia tournament will be a lot like the one at Rice. We'll play a lot of teams that we won't see anywhere else. The Sam Houston tournament is always a good, solid event, and we're looking forward to playing on their new course, which is called Raven's Nest. Arkansas-Little Rock always puts on a good tournament. We were fortunate to be invited, and, hopefully, we can take advantage of the opportunity and play well."
The Broncs won the National Minority Championships two years ago, and they hope to repeat their success this season. "It's a good trip for us," said Scott. "We're looking forward to going to Florida at the end of the school year. It's like a final test for the guys, and, hopefully, we can use it as a proving ground. Three of the guys are still here from the team that won it two years ago, and they would like to go out with a bang."
