BRONCS 13TH AFTER FIRST DAY AT SAM HALL CLASSIC

HATTIESBURG, MS-The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team is in 13th place place after the first day of action at the 15-team Sam Hall Intercollegiate, hosted by Southern Mississippi at the Hattiesburg Country Club.

The Broncs shot first-round scores of 306 and 307, giving them a 36-hole total of 613 and placing them two strokes behind 12th-place Samford.

Southeastern Louisiana leads the tournament with a two-round score of 562. Next are Wichita State at 570, McNeese State and the host Golden Eagles at 571, Iowa State at 584, Troy State at 587, Sam Houston State at 591, Nebraska at 593, Jacksonville at 604, and Nicholls State and Louisiana-Monroe at 608. Following the Broncs are Western Illinois at 630 and William Carey at 652.

Freshman Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, AB/Wetaskiwin Composite HS) led the Broncs, shooting rounds of 82 and 70 for 152 and a tie for 48th place. Junior Paul Manganilla (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith HS/Navarro College) shot 75 and 78 for 153 and a tie for 59th, junior Rudy Celedon (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) shot 75 and 79 for 154 and a tie for 55th, junior Ben Piper (Lubbock, TX/Coronado HS) shot 76 and 80 for 156 and a tie for 59th, and junior John Huerta (Alice, TX/Alice HS) shot 80 and 84 for 164 and a tie for 78th.

The tournament will conclude Tuesday afternoon.
