BRONCS SPLIT OPENERS
COLLEGE STATION, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's men's tennis team split a pair of matches on their first day of action in the 2003 season.
The Broncs defeated Trinity, 5-2, then lost to 13th-ranked Texas A&M, 6-0.
The Broncs won two of the three doubles matches in tie-breakers against Trinity, earning the doubles point. Sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) and junior Tom Mangleschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) won their singles matches in supertiebreakers to help carry Texas-Pan American to the win.
"We played well in the first match, Trinity is one of the best Division III teams in the nation," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We won pressure matches at one and two doubles. It was a good test for the first match of the year. We played a little better against Texas A&M, but they have a good team. We played with a lot of heart, but we didn't capitalize on some of our opportunities. Overall, we saw some good things out of our guys, and it was a good opening weekend."
The Broncs return to action when they visit New Mexico State in two weeks.
