BRONCS FALL TO UTA AT SLC TOURNAMENT

ARLINGTON, TX-Texas-Arlington grabbed the momentum by winning the doubles point, and went on to a 4-0 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American's men's tennis team in the semi-finals of the Southland Conference Tournament at the UTA Tennis Center Saturday.

The Mavericks came from behind at number one singles after having won at number two singles, clinching the doubles point. UTA then won the first set in each of the six singles matches, and the Broncs could not recover in time.

Sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) lost at number two doubles to David Corrie and Niels Buksik, 8-4. At number one, junior Tom Mangelschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) and sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) held 7-5 and 8-7 leads, but UTA's team of Nathan McGregor and Sandy Farquharson came back and won the match in a tie-breaker, 9-8.

Corrie then defeated Koziell, 6-0, 6-3 at number two singles. Javier Carrillo defeated senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) at number three, 6-0, 6-1, and Farquharson downed freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) at number five, 6-4, 6-1.

"We came out and played well in the doubles and, after we lost the doubles, the momentum went completely in the other direction, and we never recovered," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "I felt good about our chances had we won the doubles, but we lost the first sets in all of the singles matches. We played better in the second sets, but we dug too much of a hole against a good team, and you can't do that against a good opponent. I have to give UTA credit. They came out after the doubles and were focused. I'm proud of the way our guys played. We had a great season, and accomplished things that hadn't been done here in a long time. Hopefully, next year we'll take another step forward. This loss doesn't take anything away from what we accomplished this season."

The Broncs fell to 13-8 with the defeat, which ends their season. Texas-Arlington improved to 11-10, and will play for the SLC championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships Sunday.
