BRONCS CLINCH TIE FOR 2ND IN SLC, DOWN UTSA, 4-3

EDINBURG, TX- The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team clinched its best finish ever in the Southland Conference with one of its biggest victories in recent memory Saturday afternoon.

The Broncs defeated Texas-San Antonio, 4-3, and clinched a tie for second place in the final SLC men's tennis standings.

Texas-Pan American won at number two and three doubles to clinch the crucial doubles point. At number two, sophomore Jeremy Salvo (So., Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) defeated Jonas Hoglund and Jon Michael Olfindo, 8-5, while at number three, senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/ Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) and freshman Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/ Bennett Memorial School) downed Jon Jenkin and Brandon Silvester, 8-6.

The Broncs then clinched the victory by winning the first three singles matches. At number six, porter downed Silvester, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) defeated Dennis Andrade at number two, 6-4, 6-1, while Salvo defeated Jenkin at number four, 6-2, 6-4.

"Winning the doubles point gave us the momentum, then we got off to a good lead in the singles matches," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "Jeremy and Nik played very well in both singles and doubles, while Matt played well, even though he lost his singles match. We had a great crowd today, and they gave us a lot of energy and a lot of support. I was very proud of our guys and the way they played."

The Broncs improved to 12-7 with the victory, while the Roadrunners fell to 8-11 with the defeat. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they compete at the Southland Conference Tournament April 25-27 at Texas-Arlington.
